Lampwork refers to the technique of working hot glass with a flame. Originally this was done with a oil lamp and foot operated bellows, but modern workshops have gas torches. An alternative name for this method of melting glass is flamework.
How strong are glass beads?
Surprisingly strong; especially when they have been annealed in a kiln to avoid the stress that can develop in glass that cools too quickly. I ensure all my beads are kiln annealed so that I can sell them with the confidence that they should last forever provided they are properly cared for.
I love your hollow beads, but are they more fragile than solid beads?
I make hollow beads with resonably thick walls. I have performed drop tests on my tiled kitchen floor and they generally bounce. I am confident they should not break in normal use, but common sense suggests they will be easier to damage.
How did you learn lampworking.
I took a day's class with Ray Skene, bought and avidly read books and then practiced and practiced. Since then I have also taken a class with Dora Schubert.
